How to read the Champions League table

Points, record and goal difference

A win earns three points, a draw earns one and a loss earns none. P means played, W won, D drawn, L lost, GF goals scored, GA goals conceded and GD goal difference.

Champions League final tie-breakers in order

After all eight league-phase games, the order is: goal difference; goals scored; away goals scored; wins; away wins; the combined points, goal difference and goals scored by the club’s eight opponents; lower disciplinary points; then the higher club coefficient.

Provisional rankings before the final matchday

From Matchday 1 through Matchday 7, the first five criteria are used. If clubs are still level, they can share a provisional ranking and appear alphabetically. The opponent-strength, disciplinary and coefficient criteria are applied when the league phase is complete.

Why another club's result can move your team

Every club faces only eight of the other 35 teams. The later tie-breakers measure how those eight opponents performed, so another final score can affect two clubs that remain level on points.

Quick answers

Champions League table FAQs

How do teams qualify from the Champions League league phase?

Teams finishing 1–8 go directly to the Round of 16. Teams in positions 9–24 enter a two-leg knockout play-off, while positions 25–36 are eliminated.

What do P, W, D, L, GF, GA and GD mean?

P is played, W wins, D draws, L losses, GF goals scored, GA goals conceded and GD goal difference. A win earns three points and a draw earns one.

What is the first Champions League table tie-breaker?

If clubs finish level on points after all eight league-phase matches, UEFA first compares goal difference, then goals scored, away goals scored, wins and away wins before later opponent-strength and disciplinary criteria.

Why can tied clubs share a position before the final matchday?

From Matchday 1 through Matchday 7, UEFA initially applies goal difference, goals scored, away goals, wins and away wins. If clubs remain level, they can share a provisional rank; the full ten criteria apply after all league-phase matches are complete.

Do eliminated Champions League teams enter the Europa League?

No. Clubs finishing 25th to 36th are eliminated from European competition for the season and do not drop into the Europa League.

How many league-phase games does each club play?

Each of the 36 clubs plays eight different opponents: four games at home and four away. All clubs are ranked together in one table.
